In the details

One of the advantages of being a second shooter is focusing on the details. When the main photographer may be capturing the overall theme and getting in the list of posed shots necessary to document the day, the second shooter has the freedom to find the emotion from a different angle.

I had the great privilege to work for Kim DeLoach, of Kim DeLoach Photography, a couple of weekends ago as her second shooter for a local wedding. I’ve been treading beyond the boundaries of lifestyle photography and finding there is lots to love about weddings! There is so much beauty in the day of a wedding. All the time spent preparing the tiniest details are just waiting to be captured! I love when you catch that sweet glimpse between bride and groom or the way their hands touch, and of course there’s something so magical about that first kiss. There is just so much joy in that day.

So, as I found myself editing images from that day, I thought it might be fun to take you along on the journey…maybe rekindle your wedding romance, no matter how long ago it was.

Jenna was such a beautiful bride. What I loved most about her is the way she gushed over her sweet bridesmaids and how gorgeous they looked.  Every detail had been thought out from the colorful bouquets to the cowboy boots!

As the second shooter you have the advantage of no one looking at you! You can move around and capture the style of the wedding while the wedding party is standing still. These are details you will want to remember.

Oh the ceremony! The sweet heart-felt emotion of vows and tender first kiss…need I say more? I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to break out your wedding album right about now.

The moments between ceremony and reception may be my favorite. I love the way these two were so into each other and the simple way she held his hand. LOVE IT!

And the irony of it all is that at the end of the day it does not mark “the end”, but the beginning of “just married” and their journey as husband and wife.

I am so grateful to Kim DeLoach for having the faith in me to come along side her and capture this day as her second shooter. From day one when I made the decision to embrace photography she has been an open book of sound knowledge and advice. I started out holding a reflector for this amazing photographer and today find myself working by her side. But, make no mistake, I still pick up the reflector, ladder, lenses, and whatever else the main photographer needs. And in all honesty, I love it! No matter whether I’m holding a camera or a reflector in my hand, I am learning what it takes to be a great wedding photographer. 🙂
